Nigeria’s Super Falcons are OUT of the 2026 WAFCON also Women’s World Cup Qualifying

Nigeria's hopes of defending their continental crown suffered a stunning blow after a 1–0 defeat to arch-rivals Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. 

The tightly contested match in Casablanca saw the record 10-time champions struggle to find their usual attacking rhythm against a fiercely disciplined and resilient Indomitable Lionesses side.

The decisive moment of the clash arrived in the 19th minute when 19 year old midfielder Myriam Nyadjou broke the deadlock with a brilliant, curling free kick. 

Her powerful set piece caught Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie off guard, flying past the defensive wall and into the top corner to give Cameroon a surprise lead that they would fiercely protect for the remainder of the evening.

Despite dominating possession and mounting heavy pressure in search of an equalizer, the Super Falcons were continually thwarted by stellar goalkeeping and a stubborn Cameroonian backline. 

Late tactical changes including the introduction of veteran star Asisat Oshola failed to spark a breakthrough, leaving the defending champions unable to convert their numerous scoring chances.

This shocking exit marks a historic low for Nigerian women's football, as it is the first time across 14 editions of the tournament that the Super Falcons have failed to reach the semi-finals. 

Beyond losing the chance to retain their title, the defeat also strips them of an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, leaving the team to navigate a much harder path ahead.
